Finding your niche is something many business owners struggle with. Communo member Sean Mellis is a great example of finding your niche and leaning in.
Mellis runs a small communications agency focused on rural municipalities. He’s been serving this unique type of client for more than 20 years.
“Every day is a little different, but I’m working with a specific client that needs my team’s skill set,” says Sean, the owner and founder of Rdeca Group.
His company is a multi-channel creative agency with a focus on communication design, brand management and interactive media.
Finding a solid pipeline of professionals
Rdeca Group has a staff of five but regularly taps into a flexible talent pool for project work. Sean says his Rolodex got a lot bigger when he joined Communo.
“Immediately, there were benefits to getting a solid pipeline of professionals to help produce the work – photographers, videographers and media planners.”
“Communo is a very fertile environment.”
Sean has also found new work opportunities through Communo, which helps with business development. Like many business owners, Sean says it’s a constant challenge to keep new business flowing in.
“Whether you’re keeping current clients deliriously happy or you’re prospecting new clients, it’s a real juggling act,” he says. “When things dry up, you have to become a lot more nimble, you have to make sure you have a real solid client base and a strategy in place to keep new ones coming in.”
For the first time in his professional career, Sean says Communo has challenged him to re-assess his business and positioning.
“Communo is a very fertile environment for me to have these interesting and sometimes difficult conversations about my own business and how I can make it better.”
Sean says he gives Communo “five stars” for the time and care it takes curating such an excellent network of high-quality professionals.
“As a creative professional out there on my own, it’s very insular and very lonesome. However, within Communo, it feels like I’m part of a big agency, although I have the autonomy to manage and grow my business.
